The last time we reviewed a Kyocera product, it was a simple entry-level multifunction printer in the form of the Kyocera FS-1325 that was aimed at the Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) sector. We move up a rung on the ladder today by reviewing a Kyocera printer aimed at the Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The printer we’ll be reviewing today is the Kyocera FS-6525MFP.
The Kyocera FS-6525MFP is a monochrome laser printer that will allow users to print in A3 and A4 sheets. It falls in the ECOSYS series from Kyocera. This means that this printer sports Kyocera’s ECOSYS technology. There are multiple benefits that this technology offers such as increased reliability and durability of the device along with significantly reduced costs and environmental impact.
The Kyocera ECOSYS technology is especially suited to those SMEs that focus on the cost efficiency their operations and their impact on the environment. If you’re one of those businesses and are considering the Kyocera FS-6525MFP, then here’s our review for your perusal.
Strengths of Kyocera FS-6525MFP
The greatest strength of the Kyocera FS-6525MFP is, of course, that it is based on the Kyocera ECOSYS technology but we’ve already spoken of that. However, to give an example of what the Kyocera ECOSYS technology will give you, let’s consider the costs of running the Kyocera FS-6525MFP day in day out. This technology is so efficient that the per-page cost of this device is nearly the same for genuine and generic cartridges.
Regardless of which type you use, this printer will give you a running cost of about 1.05 cents per page which is on the low side for most multifunction printers falling in this segment. Another direct benefit of the Kyocera ECOSYS technology is the durability of this printer and the long life of its components. In addition to helping you save money through its toner saving running cost, this printer will also help you save cost on paper through its automatic duplexing feature.
Apart from this, the Kyocera FS-6525MFP is quite a versatile multifunction printer. In its standard rendition, it comes with a paper capacity of 600 sheets which can be divided into a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 500-sheet universal paper cassette.
However, users will have the option to take this maximum paper capacity to as high as 1,600 sheets by adding a 1,000-sheet add-on paper tray or even something smaller such as 500-sheet add-on paper tray. For the functionality and feature set that the Kyocera FS-6525MFP offers, it is quite compact, particularly if you compare it to other devices in the market that have similar characteristics. The Kyocera FS-6525MFP measures about 590mm wide, 590mm deep and 694mm tall.
Moreover, like all modern day printers from this Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), the Kyocera FS-6525MFP comes with HyPAS™ solution platform. The purpose of this platform is to make it possible for users to create customised solutions to their problems. The HyPAS™ solution platform adds a level of software flexibility that hasn’t been seen before.
Weaknesses of Kyocera FS-6525MFP
While the Kyocera FS-6525MFP is a wonderful printer, it isn’t without its flaws. The biggest issue you may have with this device is its initial cost. The initial cost of the Kyocera FS-6525MFP is quite high at around $2,500. Some stores may even offer this printer to you at an exorbitant $6,000! While the $6,000 price tag is completely unviable, we believe that $2,500 is fairly feasible. The reason for this is that this device will pay back the user over the long run owing to its lower running cost.
Also, the fax functionality isn’t provided to the standard version of this printer. You’ll have to go for the optional fax system over and above the basic device if you want it. It makes sense from the OEM’s point of view because most people don’t really use their faxes. However, if you did want the fax functionality, then this little change could peg you back a few dollars.
The print speed of the Kyocera FS-6525MFP is decidedly average for an A3 printer. Formally, it is rated at 13 pages per minute (ppm) for A3 sheets and 25 ppm for A4 sheets. Additionally, you should take note that there is no wireless functionality with this printer. You’ll, instead, be relying on the USB 2.0 and Ethernet ports to connect the Kyocera FS-6525MFP to your network.
Finally, we mentioned that this printer is compact in the previous section. Well, it is but that doesn’t mean that this printer is light. The Kyocera FS-6525MFP measures a hefty 52.2 Kg so it might be a good idea for you to invest in some wheels for this little baby. If you don’t, you may need up to four people to move this thing around.
Key Features of Kyocera FS-6525MFP
The Kyocera FS-6525MFP is, more or less, a very good device for those SMEs that want to save over time and only need monochrome A3 prints. The print quality is more than sufficient for the usual A3 applications with the device rated to produce 1200 x 1200 dots per inch (dpi). The standard version of the Kyocera FS-6525MFP comes with 1GB memory but you will have the option of upping that to 2GB with the additional add-on.
There are a number of other optional add-ons that add to the versatility of the Kyocera FS-6525MFP. Some of these add-ons include a document finisher, a wooden cabinet with a wooden base unit and a metal cabinet with a metal base unit. The device also has a full-colour touchscreen-based control panel on top for your convenience that can be used to control the device.
